Go Green!

Ten Simple Steps You Can Take To Help Preserve

Our Earth

*Did you know that most food travels 1500 miles before it reaches your plate? Much of it travels even more. Buying locally produced foods cuts down on all the co2 expended to ship foods and keeps dollars in your local economy! Remember that seasonality has its benefits too. New England enjoys a great apple crop every year, but in the Spring grocery stores import apples from far away places like New Zealand.

*Know where your food comes from! Goods such as coffee and bananas won't grow anywhere near New England.  But that doesn't mean you have to give them up.  Support Fair Trade and Shade Grown goods. Fair Trade ensures that farmers in places like South America get a fair price for the crops they grow.  Shade Grown coffee is grown under the canopy of the rainforest trees.  Both these measures ensure farmers can support themselves on less cleared land.

*Eat less meat.  One less beef-based meal per week will save 300 pounds of co2 annually!

*Lowering your thermostat by 2 degrees in cooler months and raising it 2 degrees in the warmer months can reduce your co2 output by 1 ton.

*Plant a tree! One well-placed leafy tree has the cooling effect of ten household air conditioners.

*If you don't have a low-flush toilet you can reduce the water cosumption of your toilet by adding a couple of bricks to the tank.

*Carpool.  25 pounds of co2 are released with every gallon of gas your vehicle burns.

*A 15-watt CF bulb will replace the light of one 60 watt incandescent bulb.  That equals a 75% reduction in energy consumption.

*A laptop uses half the electricity of a desktop computer.

*A typical computer, left on permanently consumes more than $100 per year in electricty.  Power save, sleep mode, or overnight shutdown can reduce annual use by 85%.

Welcome to the first edition of our newsletter!

The Abigail's Bakery Staff enjoying time away from

the ovens at our 2008 Holiday Party!

Abigail's Bakery has undergone quite a change since this time last year.  Where to begin with all our changes?  As you may be aware Abigail's received USDA Organic Certification from the NH Dept of Agriculture.  This was a year-long process that was very involved.  We are proud to say we are the first and only organic certified bakery in all of NH.

Abigail's tradition has always been to bring you organic breads since we first opened our doors in 1976.  Our USDA seal serves as verification that we use and have always used the finest certified organic ingredients available.  We also recently received USDA Organic Certification for our laying hens which produce the eggs for our breads.  Abigail's is always looking for ways to reduce outside consumption for our raw materials and this is one of the ways we have found to do just that.

We have settled into our new facility built on South Sugar Hill in Weare NH.  We are adjusting nicely to all the new space we have.  We even have loading docks!!  This new space has allowed us to increase production by over 100%.  We are still baking around the clock to fill our orders, but find it much easier to move around and get the job done.

Abigail's Bakery has been working hard with other local groups and charities within NH to teach the importance of living an organic, earth-friendly lifestyle.  We hope that this newsletter helps our customers understand the mission and business values that make Abigail's Bakery so unique.  We encourage you to put the featured earth-friendly tips and advice from Abigail's staff to use! Every little bit helps when it comes to earth preservation, and I hope you all will join us on this quest.

Peace,

Jenny Chartier, Owner and Baker
